Roses for Marta

at 1:26 AM

Roses for Marta, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

Paris has brought out the romantic side of Rudy. While I spent the day with Casey and Ronell he braved the metro going to the Champ D'Ellysais and Arc de Triomph, climbing to the top for a view of the city.
On his way back to the apt. on rue Aubriot he stopped for these roses for me.

I normally do not sketch from a photo but this was fun to do!

at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris.

Meeting of bloging friends

at 11:59 AM
I can not say enough about what wonderful ladies Robyn, Ronell and Casey are: meeting the latter two today in Paris.

After exchanging of greetings and coffee we ventured put for the day. Finally, these ladies brought glorius sunshine with them!

First a nice walk to the Sennalier art store where I wowed a real french painter's smock but didn't buy of course.

Next lots of window shopping while in search of the perfect place to have lunch....and we found it! My favorite: the raspberry and beets over soft ricotta cheese... Magnifique!

Now, with bellya full and happy hearts we wandered over to the Luxembourg Gardens to sit and sketch. I had casey in front of me so she made it into today's sketch.
It began to sprinkle a bit and then really poured for a few minutes. So we wandered some more.

By now I was thinking they had conspired to take me on a death march.

We happened into the Montparnasse cemetarie and went in search of Jim Morrison's grave. I got back to the apt. and looked it up (we had'nt found it) only to see he is at Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise. LOL

Another art store' then a stop for hot chcolate and more conversation. Casey continued to sketch.

We walked back to the metro/train station, hugged goodbye and went our separate way.

Ronelle and Casey,
Thank you again for coming to spend the day with me. You were just as I imagined and only wish you lived around the corner! I had the best adventure today and really loved our jaunt through the cemetery. I only hope someday to reciprocate. Again, merci beaucoup!

7 random things

Monday, October 29, 2007 at 12:58 PM
My friend Desiree taged me. Here they are;
1. I can fly. At night I have wonderful 'flying adventures' I am not sure if they are just dreams.
2. I got a tatoo on my 43rd birthday and Rudy didn't speak to me for 3 days.
3. On rare occasions i like smoking a good cigar.
4. I eat artichokes for their orgasmic effect.
5. Red is my favorite color; it is the color of love, blood and juicy pomogranites.
6. I love shoes and purses and thought myself a queen buying expensive crushed patent leather pumps in Rome and matching handbag in Florence.
7. I am a techie addict; to the Internet, my iPhone and anything else that is new and makes my life easier.

Bonjour Mom and Papa!
I just wanted to take the time out to thank you both for this amazing experience. Even though sometimes we all had our "moments," this will be a memory that will undoubetdly last forever (who's going to forget Loch Ness in London!). You should check your watches (mom, hope you found yours) because I think there was some kind of time change in Europe recently (my wrist watch was off but thankfully the iPhone kept "real" time). Charles de Gaulle is crazy, they have this self check in line but mine didn't work so I had to go see the ticket counter person. On the plane ride there, I almost had my own window and aisle duo until some people got on the plane last minute. I ended up sitting next to a French lady who probably knew about 4 words but tried to communicate with me nonetheless! Luckily for her, I knew the word "pomme" so I was able to help her get some apple juice from the English speaking attendants. When we landed, the crazy French people all threw
their pillows up in the air in delight. Weirdos. Then the line for customs in Dallas was sort of long but I talked to a nice old Brazilian dude who was a chemical engineer. I even forgot how to speak English though, I was messing up all kinds of words! Seth picked me up on time. My house was ok. Car a little slow to start but you'd be too if you had a 3 week nap. As much fun as it all was, I thoroughly enjoyed taking a shower in MY shower this morning.

Thanks again. I miss you guys already but now as dad would say, you have the "boudoir." Oh, one more thing, they confiscated the olive oil. When I went through security it showed up as a potato on the x-ray machine. They kept asking me where the potato was. LOL. So stowe it if you want to bring it back.

Love to you both, Amy

Who is more beautiful?, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

what to do on a rainy day in Paris? Go back to bed, make more love and then layzily venture out with umbrellas in hand to a visit to the Lovre. I have never seen it so crowded and was happy we could bypass the long lines with our Paris museum pass. Rudy enjoyed the visit and I was happy that my first visit years ago was much less crowded. Back then I had even gotten a few minutes alone with the Monalisa. Resting up a bit in the apt. Before going out again later. I still have a sketch to do for today.

what a glorius day! Today after Amy left us very early this morning, we went back to bed. We made love, then he made me a wonderful breakfast with mimosas. Then we showered and headed put the door. Nearby is the Picasso museum with a specal cubisim exhbit which was great. The most impessive to me were his sketchbooks. From there a metro ride to les invalides so rudy could see the gold dome in the hour of so we had of sunshine today. Next a 'death march' over the pont alexander then a walk to place de la concord, into the Tuilaeies gardens tp the Orangie museum tp gaze upon Monet'a water lilies in a circular rpom. From there we stopped for some lunch galletes (crepes) and wine. Next o tppk him to see the entrace tp the Lovre and he saod " i really like Paris" i think he understood wjy this is my most favorite city in the world! We got pn the metro, stopped at the market and are restong a bit before venturing out again. Bon soir mes amies.

the joke in our family for this trip is that I have been taking Rudy on 'death marches' every day. We walk and walk and walk some more! Today I sided with them that it was just too cold so we only walked a small portion of the gardens at Versailles. But tomorrow I will plan another death march for us.

She bought some cure things in Barcelona including this cap. On the flight to Paris she worked on the daily crossword, Rudy read the paper and I sketched her since she couldn't move much. We have kept informed about the fires back home and have our friends and families in our hearts. Rudy knows he'd be helping fight them if he was home. I too might have been called to extra shifts. Amy's home in San diego is near the beach so it is safe but the air quality is said to be very bad. At her job they have canceled work for the week. We are enjoying our trip but our thoughts with home.

Marta c'est arrive a Paris!

at 10:55 AM
This truly is my favorite city in the world. There is something I feel inside when I go down the rues, see life about me. I love it! My French is tres rusty but I got us a taxi, made small talk and ordered dinner for us.
Our apt is very tiny and reminds me of "the casita" our little trailer back home. But we are in a great area with everything close by.
I am most pleased to have wifi in the apt too! So I can continue to post photos, sketches and blogs.
Going to take a hot shower, maybe paint today's sketch and go to bed.
Bon nuit....

Today was very nice, a leisurely stroll to the Picasso museum which was really great.  Thank you Gabi for such great recomendations in Barcelona.  Then a nice lunch near the cathedral where I did a sketch from the table we were at. Lot of Sangria with this lunch as well....I will miss all the sangria.
We walked back to find Amy waiting for us.  Her and I then went out for some last minute shopping...it´s been such a nice trip....early to bed for tomorrow we fly to Paris....adios...

Oh, I love Barcelona!!!! Vale!!!!!!!!
A country this is beautiful ...Spain....and I can speak the language.....really a plus!
We have the most gorgeous apt. just off Las Ramblas which is a strolling boulevard with a median lined with beautiful trees.  I wish I could show it to you but still....no wireless internet access...really bumming me out.
After settleing into our spacious 2 bedroom apt.....yes...rudy and I have a room all to ourselves....ok, I won´t go there.....I can´t wait for the sun to go down and for Amy to join friends in town....
we went strolling...had paella, tapas and sangria...mucha sangria for lunch...then onto the port to walk, admire the mass of boats and yaytes...sorry too much sangria..can´t spell.   now after a stop at the grocery store...I am ready to relax for the evening and pplan out tomoorrow´s adventure...i promise to take lots of photos of the apt...I am really impressed at what I got for just about 150.00 dollars per night.....buenas noches....

Ciao Italia

Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 9:16 AM
It's time to say arriverdeci to Italy.  Rome was wonderful and exciting and we were fortunate to have great weather.  Florence was bitterly cold but even so we were able to enjoy this city which is full of artistic history.  Today we slept in and then decided on the Piti Palace as it was an indoor place to be.  Our plans for a picnic at the piazzele Michelangelo overlooking Florence and it's Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo were drizzled out.  We are experiencing cold like we are not used to at home.   So it was the palace today which holds great works of art, a glimpse at the Boboli Gardens from the windows and then onto a wonderful lunch near the palace where we enjoyed some vino and good pastas and pizza.  We then walked to Santa Croce church but they charged to go in and so we just sat on the church steps to rest for a bit before heading back to the B&B.  Amy and I went out again to mingle in the crowds and have some hot chcolate and pastery and panne cotta.  A slow walk back and we are ready to pack and get on our way in the morning to Barcelona.
I did a sketch in the resturant today because anything outside was just too cold.  Hopefull in Spain I might get some wireless connection, if not, be assured I am happy with my quick illustrations and will post when I can.

Afternoon with Robyn

Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 9:06 AM
Artic...the weather has turned bitter cold for this california girl. This afternoon before venturing out I put layer upon layer of clothing on to keep warm...and still I managed to look cute....LOL...
I met up with Robyn at noon and then spent the rest of the afternoon with her talking, eating and enjoying Florence. She took me to her favorite piazza where the Hospedale dei Inocenti ..the orphanage built by Brunelleschi is and we went inside to the small museum. I could almost hear the children's voices echoing from the past. It is truely a priveldge to be able to see some of these places and try to imagine what life was like back then.
We enjoyed much conversation, sharing of sketchbooks....how wonderful to get to touch a Robyn masterpiece!!! We had a whole bottle of vino and shared a tiramisu for dessert. High on the list was a trip to an art store but when we got there we were told it was closed till Monday...I guess I will have to return someday.
To lessen my dissappointment she took me to a fine little shop with leather bound books and journals. It was a mistake to take me there just to look. I found a beautiful leather bound book that had a journal slipped into it with fine paper. After I am done using it as a sketch book I will bind a new watercolor book to slip into it....It will last me another 50 years I am sure.
I also found a beautiful purse to go with my new shoes......and a trip to the ancient pharmacy at St. M. Novella was a treat as well, smelled old, and aromatic and I could visualize several hundred years back people in long robes and candlelit rooms...and concoctions being prepared...I bought a pomagranate soap and souvonir soap dish.
Alas I walked her back to the train station and I lost my way back to the B&B but found an interesting way back which provided me with a wonderful view of the ponte vecchio so I stopped and sketched it.......so I did get some sketching in today.
I want to thank Robyn for her trek into Florence today on this blustry autum day, for the wonderful lunch and vino, but most of all for a memory I will treasure forever. She took some photos as did I but her's will probably be posted before I can get mine up...still no wifi connection for my iphone......Robyn, mile grazie per tutto!!!

eating and such

at 2:32 AM
People always tell me that I am going to gain weight when I travel.  But on the contrary I find that I loose weight from all the walking I do.  I don't eat as much either.  The food is always wonderful, especially here in Italy, but my appetite decreases with all the activity I am doing.
I have had wonderful cappucinos and cornetas here which are the italian version of crossoints.  The pasta is indescribable and the sauces I know I could never replicate at home....so enjoy while here.  The vino always plenty and very good...cin, cin.
As for the matter of gaining-loosing weight.....I have had to cinch up my pants to the snuggest button hole and they are begining to look a little loose on me.  Rudy says we have to keep up the walking once we are home.  But sadly, the strolling in my neighboorhood just wouldn't be the same as it is here.  La passegiate...the stroll...is my favorite part of the day in Italy.
ciao e buon appetito...marta

baby it's cold outside! Well, I knew it would happen...we would all get museumed out...so after doing the uffizi gallery yesterday we decided that today's early visit to the Academia would be just to gaze upon David. So we got up very early as our reservations were for 8:30am and got right in. Amy needed to use the WC aka:water closet so we veered into another gallery....wow!!!!! There he was...without a single tourist in site ..except me..so I sat, admired and did a very poor sketch of David...soon Amy was back, the tour groups and guides were amassed at his feet and I SECRETLY smiled that he'd been all mine just a little bit ago. Satisfied we left the Academia and headed in search for something resembling a real american breakfast...we got close, omlettes, pasteries and cappucinos.

heading back to the B&B for a bit and then I'm running back out to meet my friend Robyn for the afternoon. I have done some nice sketches but have no wireless connection that i have found so can't post any photos...maybe later in the trip.

heard from adam just a few minutes ago...he got home to riverside safe....one less thing to worry about...ciao from florence....marta

Vatican Museum and St. Peter's

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 8:58 AM
So many people today to see the Sisteen Chapel.  It was not a pleasurable experience like it was for me last year.  We were hearded through like cattle and I was dissappointed.  Michelangelo's masterpiece of course was breathtaking and worth the visit. Rudy was in awe, Amy tired and just wanted out.  We sat outside in St. Peter's square where I did a quick sketch of the obilisk in front of me...some nuns passing by stopped to admire my work...hahaha...

A taxi ride to piazza navona for lunch at tre scalini while a young boy of about 10 years played his violin and belted out in a most beautiful voice.  Rudy was ready to hand over some coins to him but the polizia came by and shooed him away...I wish they'd left him alone.

out strolling, just Rudy and I.  I love strolling in Rome...I'm fitting into the italian way very easily...ciao

Roma

Monday, October 15, 2007 at 6:27 AM
Our travels continue.  We arrived in Rome yesterday afternoon and took a wild taxi ride into Rome and our B/B...we pushed the old wood door and climed 4 flights of stairs to find a yound Romanian girl waiting to check us in.  Our room is very spacious for italian hotel rooms but noisy from the street...but this is Rome!

We took a long walk past the wedding cake monument (Victorio Emanuel) to Campo di fiori an outdoor gathering piazza for a wonderful dinner serverd to us by a girl from Detroit here to learn italian. From there we walked to piazza navona where I was dissappointed to find the Fontana di 4 fumi under renovation with scaffoling and dry as a doornail.... but we got some pictures anyway before heading to my favorite gelaterria for pistachio-nutella gelato.

Onto the Pantheon were the stucture left us in awe...it was night, dark and impressive.....I did a great sketch and came back and painted it as a night scene...and forgot today to take apicture to post here...perhaps tomorrow.  While we were there the President of Chile showed up and madame president walked out of her limo with a wave to the crowd........ah...I have seen my first president.

a walk past a few more piazzas and collums and then past our B and B to the Trevi fountain..a photo op here with Rudy.....to bed and a new day.

Today we headed to the Colosseum and the roman forum...what a great day....lots of pictures but i am going to have to go back for some sketching because there were many possiblilities....then to lunch at an outdoor cafe whre i called my friends at work..it was 4:30am there.  Next Amy and I did some shopping and I bought the most beautiful black pumps..Amy called them power shoes.....and now some walking, a cafe for some espresso and a stop at the internet cafe....oh did I forget to mention....I LOVE ROME!!!!!!!!!!! ciao...

Our last day in London....oh, do I love London....I'll be pining for the day I'll return again.  We finally got a good sleep..we made adam buy some Benadryl and he took 75mg...he was out till we woke him at 9:30 this morning.  After a nice coffee and crossaint at a nearby caffe we got on the Tube towards KNIGHTSBRIDGE for shopping at Harrod's.  Adam ditched us for the rest of the day and Rudy waited patiently while Amy and I shopped at the Benefit counter with a sweet sales girl also named Amy.  From there to H&M where Amy found a cute outfit..
Next we went to the National Gallery and took a self guided tour of the highlights.  Our favorite: the Venus by Velasquez.  Rudy and Amy allotted me 'sketching time' and while I sketched the view from a window at the Nat. Gallery of the view of Trafalgar Sq. they went off to buy lunch for the 3 of us.  I met them on the steps to the gallery and we munched on sandwiches with all the other museum goers.  I was so happy with my sketch and was feeling pretty wonderful!  I haven't had time to paint it so won't post it yet.
Amy left us after that returning to the B&B on a bus while rudy and I got on another bus and realized we were going the wrong way. We got off and found an underground station and too the tube to Waterloo station and from there walked along the southbank along the Thames.  It was romantic and we stopped briefly for a photo of me with St. Paul's in the background and a stop at the Tate Modern (where everyone was checking out a large crack in the floor in the Turbine gallery..yes, IT was the exhibit).  #
from there we went on a boat from the Millenium bridge to the Millbank pier at the British Tate where my friend Shirley in New Yord said not to miss the Turner watercolor exhbit.  It was wonderful!!! and I especially enjoyed seeing his sketchbooks on display.  I wonder...200 years from now will mine be on display at LACMA (l.a. county museum of art)?
A walk to the B&B from there where we passed a Mexican Bar and Cantina....yes, we returned to the hotel and only amy wanted to join us and we returned to the cantina and had a most wonderful dinner....lots of coctails and good food.  Our drinks came garnished with a little fruit...I asked what it was since it was so good.....physallis....tasted somewhat like a mini quince to me but looked like a yellow tomatillo.....a walk along Victoria past the theaters and resturants to the internet cafe where now I post.....good night all....I'll check in from Rome....ciao.

today in london

Friday, October 12, 2007 at 12:36 PM
I feel like the BBc...."today in London the Gonzales family got up late because they had another night of fitfull sleep....."   At 3am 3 of us were wide awake and hanging out with the little girl from Poland who was the desk clerk at the B&B where we are staying.  After finally falling back to sleep we dragged ourselves out of bed down to breakfast...what a sight we must have been in lounge wear and us girls wearing flipflops to a proper English Breakfast.....

We got showers out of the way and then walked about 10 minutes to Buckingham Palace to catch the changing of the guard ceremony.  I took the opportunity to sketch while we waited.  This is my 4th visit to London and had never seen this spectacle before....none of us were very impressed....ah well....

|Onto the British Museum where we saw lots of cool stuff....most impressive the egyptian mummies and the rosetta stone. Then to a little eaterie forlunch and back to the room at the B&B to rest up while Rudy went to a landramat to do our laundry!!!!! Yes he is for real!!!

Now we are out for the evening....a great resturant (italian) where we got a taste of what is coming next in Rome and Florence.....amy and I enjoyed some fine wines and a delicious pannacotta for dessert.  Our waiter was Italian, friendly and was confused because we sound like Americans but we must speak spanish also!!!

Well...we leave for Rome on Sunday so I might not be able to check in again till then.  Before leaving I set up my iphone for international calling....which I have been fustrated at working only at times....I shut off my data plan and have been relying on a iffy wifi connection...that's how i have been able to post photos of the sketches i've been doing....i am happy with the one of the statue at the monument at B.palace from today.....that one was fun to do!

thank you all for the notes and comments...i don't have time to respond but am happy you are all checking in....ciao...from London..marta

Today we got up early, had a good breakfast and set out for sightseeing. We were still tired as with the time change it has been difficult for all of us to get back in sync with our internal body clocks. After breakfast onto Victoria Station to buy 3 day travel cards and take the LONDON TUBE to The Tower of London where we were facinated by so much history. I especially liked the suits of armour and took some good photos.

Then a ride on the Thames from The Tower Bridge to Westminster where we spotted Big Ben, The Houses of Parliment and went into Westminster Abby. We then walked to Trafalger Square passing no. 10 Downing Street and sat ourselves down for a nice lunch at the National Gallery's cafe. We were done...so sleepy that we will leave the tour of the National Gallery for another day.......back to the B&B and we all took long naps....Adam is still asleep...we left him a not:)

gotta run......ciao...untill next time I check in!

Yeah! I found internet access........yippy! ok, but I have to be quick.....We arrived safely though a bit late with no time to rest. We were hungry and so tired. We wandered a short way and found the Traveler's Tavern where Adam and Amy ordered 4 pints and some fish and chips. I normally don't like beer but it was good......London..we are here.

Europe Adventure 2007

Monday, October 8, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Hello everyone!
Tomorrow Rudy, Adam, Amy and I take off for a trip to Europe. Adam is joining us for the first 9 days to London and Rome, Amy continues on with us through Florence, Barcelona and Paris and flies home 6 days before Rudy and I come back around November 2nd.

I am hoping to update my art blog mARTa's art as we travel from city to city with stories and hopefully some sketches or photos of where we are. If you'd like to follow along check the blog every few days... or not...I won't be offended if you just delete my emails!

I've already posted some sketches of our trip preparations and looks like we are all set to go. I have caught a cold and am taking my airborn and drinking lots of fluids. Hopefully it will pass soon.

This week we arrive in London on Wednesday around 3pm local time. Just in time to get settled in and take ourselves out for a bite to eat and check out our surroundings. We are staying at the Elizabeth B&B near Victoria station, a good starting off point for much of our sight seeing.

Wish us a good flight and good health and I'll check in again soon!

One more day.....

Sunday, October 7, 2007 at 4:32 PM
before we leave on Tuesday morning for our European Adventure! My Amy, like her mother, is well organized and has it all together. Adam, like his father has left many things to the last minute so I know tomorrow, beside making sure I have everything....I have to make sure they have everything! I will post again Tuesday morning before we leave, then I'm hoping to post frequently (no pictures) to keep family and friends abreast of where we are and what we are up to!!!
This sketch I added to my travel journal while at quilt camp. I'm hoping I get lots of opportunities to sketch on this trip. If not, I'll hopefully have lots of reference photos!!! Oh, by the way, the new me has a cute short haircut and a bit more blond.....ciao!

Quilt Camp

at 4:27 PM
I have spent the past few days in San Diego, California at 'Quilt Camp' with my girlfriends. This special group of ladies and I have been getting together for many years now; first to teach each other how to quilt and then we picked up new talents and crafts and so now we quilt, stamp, scrapbook, knit, crochet, sew, scrapbook, sketch and this time I taught a bookbinding workshop to 5 of the ladies. I should have taken photos of the process and fun we had, of the wanderings through old town and the mango margaritas that were our favorites this weekend! But all I have to show for the weekend are some new sketchbooks I made (photos to come later) a new sketch for my travel journal and I CAUGHT A COLD! total bummer :(
