Madras Oil painting: WIP

Madras Oil painting: WIP, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

I don't know if Matisse put down an undertone first but the painting feels so warm to me that I mixed burnt sienna and yellow ochre to lay in this undertone.
After it dried for a week I sketched in the figure with vine charcoal and then lightly misted it with water to set the charcoal. I'm ready now to mix up paint and go at it!

did some rearranging in the studio today to give me a more efficient work space. Once I begin painting I'll have to see if this set up works for me. I haven't bought an easel yet but my friend Dianne lent me hers.

Searching for seashells and mica

We were off-roading through Split Mountain and Elephant Knees. Here is where we stopped to take some pictures and we all got involved in finding pieces of mica and fossilized seashells. Craig is on the left and Rudy on the right.

Madras study done on scribbler on iphone

Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 9:53 AM

I am doing several studies of Madras by Matisse in order to get 'familiar' with her before I attempt my actual size reproduction of her in oil for my master study assignment.

Life gets busy...

Friday, October 17, 2008 at 9:10 PM
School and life are keeping me very busy.  Last week we enjoyed the beach for a few days, then Sunday in Long Beach for the 5k run which was lots of fun.  Monday began with school again where more assignments were given out in French class and Painting class.  I got the perspective drawing approved and transfered onto a canvas.  I also put together a canvas for my master study which will be 39 x 31 inches.  Rudy helped me put the stretcher bars together and then staple the canvas onto it.  This evening I put on a 2nd coat of gesso and hoping tomorrow to put on the undertone.  I have decided on a Matisse for the study.
Madras
This evening I began my new 9x12 inch Raffine sketchbook.  I began in the back to try it out.  I think I'm going to like it a lot.  I haven't worked a larger sketchbook in awhile so it will be a bit different for me.  Here is the sketch (in the back of the sketchbook) I did tonight.

I have two new assignments in my oil painting class. One is to do a painting based on geometric shapes using one and two point perspective. This was challenging for me to draw out. I still have to get the sketch approved before I can start to add color. Minimum size is 18x24

Le Weekend!

Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Yes, it was a busy weekend!  Yesterday we went to the RV show to window shop.  Eerie as the place looked like a ghost town....no one is buying big RVs right now!  Then we went to the Bower's in Santa Ana to catch the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit before it ends.  It was so crowded but I did get in quite a few sketches.  When we finally got to Long Beach and checked into our nice hotel, we just relaxed and enjoyed the evening while I mentally prepared for the 5k this morning.  It was an awesome weekend!

It was a beautiful morning and despite not running for over a month, I didn't do so bad. After the race I enjoyed a nice hot shower at the Westin Long Beach where we spent the night and then Rudy took me out for a huge breakfast!!! Next month I am doing the Pasadena 5k with Wendee.

All set to run on the morning!

Beach Sketches

Friday, October 10, 2008 at 7:40 PM
Joe 3, Rudy 1San Clemente Beachautumn color on the beach

We just got back from spending a few days at the beach with friends.  The crisp October days were wonderful for walking the shoreline or napping on warm sand.  The guys took their fishing poles and we had fun cheering them on when they caught something.  This year Joe beat Rudy 3 to 1.  But Rudy's one was a large lepard shark so I think it out wins Joe's 3 little sand sharks.

I enjoyed sketching Joe as he set up his pole, the distant coastline where the Western White House (Nixon's) sits, and exploring the colors of the seaweed washed onshore.  I haven't forgotten my Guatemala sketches though and will soon find time to get color into those.  But tomorrow I leave again for the weekend to Long Beach as I am running a 5k there on Sunday.  Wish me luck!

You expected a photo of the beach?

at 7:33 AM

We did leave for a few days at the beach yesterday.  Perfect weather and looking forward to relaxing with friends.  But last week when I came home from Guatemala I had a notice that Social Security now wants me to have a mental status exam........am I crazy????  So this morning I left the beach to come back to Riverside (about 80 miles ) for my exam later this morning.  Then I'll drive back in time for late afternoon  munchies and vino with Rudy and our friends Joe and Donna.   I kneaded Nina's Sweet bread dough last night and put it in the oven this morning.  I enjoyed a piece, warm from the oven, before taking off this morning.  Joe likes my bread pudding so tomorrow the leftovers will appear as bread pudding for dessert.

Oil painting exploration

I had wanted to share my adventure of Guatemala after getting back last Monday but I was barely home a few hours and got really sick with the stomach flu and an upper respiratory infection.  I had been looking forward to going out for a nice steak dinner and instead drank Gatoraide and ate rice with broth for 2 days.  I am on the road to recovery now and am feeling much better.

Tomorrow we leave for a few days at the beach in our 'casita' (our little trailer).  So the Guatemala escapades will have to wait.  Well, ok, here's the photo of me and the guys....no explanation needed right?

Me and my guys
I spent the week catching up with my french homework and studying for today's test.  I also had to catch up in the oil painting class.  They were working on painting from a collage that had been put together from magazine images.  I quickly put something together and then the instructor tweaked it some more and this was the result.

I really didn't care for the collage but with time slipping away I got started.  I soon found that alizarin crimson was too smeary and I was fighting it.  My bff Tricia helped me out by pointing out that A.C. being a transparent pigment would not go on smooth and opaque....dah...I should have figured it out myself.  Then I went to Jana's blog and knew that it would hold some wise words for me; which it did.  So I didn't give up!  I finished the painting in the studio today so I'm now all caught up with my school work.   Now, I can enjoy the beach for a few days!

I feel bad that I haven't had time to browse the art blogs or leave comments to anyone.  I will get back on track soon....I hope!

Sabbath

Sabbath, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

I went on this medical mission with a group of 7th Day Adventist. I learned a lot of things about their religion while on this trip, one being they go to church on Saturday instead of Sunday.
On our first Saturday there we attended the Children's Church in Magdalena Milpas Altas, about half an hour from Antigua, Guatemala.

This is pencil, watercolor added later, transfer image with color pencil of Bienvenidos.

watercolor and ink with ink jet transparency transfer of photo image of me.

This is done by printing a photo on a color inkjet transparency sheet. You then brush a matte acrylic medium onto the sketchbook page (thin application) and lay the image onto the page. Burnish to transfer image. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. This one not too good.
