Sharp turn in the road

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 10:20 AM
A couple of months ago I realized I had to stop working because of my impaired vision.  I felt like I had been on this road where things mostly went smooth, a few bumps here and there, but really no major obstacles in my way.  That last day of work was not planned as my last day but I came home that night knowing I just couldn't do it anymore.  Thanks to the wonderful doctors I have I am now in the process of filing for disability and retirement.

When all this came about that road I was on hooked a sharp turn and since then I have been trying to find my way.  All has been good so far.  I am enjoying my time at home, cooking, cleaning, some travel and little else.  So my art has taken a bit of a hiatus past few months.  That's ok, because the road hasn't smoothed out yet!

I was in the Social Security office today to present documents and while waiting I realized I don't carry my sketchbook and pen with me anymore.  What a fool I am!  I missed a great opportunity.  I will rectify that immediately.  I am pleased to say that come the fall term in September I have registered for a beginning painting class (hoping to learn to work in oils) and French 1.  I might not be able to drive in a few months so I better take the painting class now!  So, soon this blog will be overflowing with new art work I hope, or at least oil studies that I'm sure will be assigned.   I adopted a new look to the blog as well.  One that is more casual and laid back, like ME!  I hope you like it!

Right now I just take a day at a time.  Yesterday I watched the grand-nephew and I delighted in his world for the day.  I can't wait to let the little guy come paint with me when he is older.  Tomorrow I am taking my grand niece Annie and my dear friend Shon to San Diego to the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit, to night time at the zoo and kayaking in Mission Bay.  Of course sketching supplies in tow for all three of us!  I will present when I return.

I've spent most of my online time filling out forms for disability but also perusing my favorite art blogs.  When I changed the layout I lost my list of blogs so if you come by here and would like to be added, just let me know!  Everyday, you my online art friends, continue to inspire me as I glimpse into your daily world.   Thanks for visiting!

I love the new look - like notes taped to a message board, just waiting for someone to come across them and be inspired.

And that's what you do for me - inspire me with your fantastic attitude and zest for life, regardless of the turns it takes. I can't wait to see the paintings and sketches and photos and hear about your days in this new leg of the journey.

  5. I love your new look too, Marta.

Very excited to hear about your oil painting class - I suspect you are going to love it and I do hope we get to go along for the ride.

As for French - I do know you'll love that. You have much more talent for language than I. I think I'd have more fun if you were in my Italian class!

You are such an inspiration and I'm very much looking forward to seeing where this "turn in the road" takes you. You have such a huge love of life that I know your future will be worth watching from the cyberspace sidelines. I loved the video of you and Gracie -- what a delightful girl and so lucky to have you for an aunt!!
