In just a few hours........

Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 6:45 PM

I board a plane headed to Guatemala City, Guatemala.  I am joining my friend Dr. DeLaCruz (Karen) and a group of about 35 on a humanitarian/medical mission.  I will be gone for 10 days to several areas of Guatemala.  I had my typhoid and Hepatitis vaccines taken care of a few weeks ago, personal medications to cover me in case of illness and travel insurance to get me home if need be.  But of course, that is all just common sense preparation.

My belongings are split between my carryon backpack and my everyday backpack with my little day pack stuffed inside.  It will be a long night with checking in at LAX of personal and medical supplies.  Then I'm hoping to get some sleep on route.  We arrive about 8am tomorrow and will have a quiet day waiting for the rest of group  (flying in from Miami).  Then it's work for the next 9 days!  Karen did say she's arranged 2 days of sightseeing to give everyone a break midweek.

I am not sure of internet access so I might not be posting till I get back.  I'm hoping to at least be able to text message to home and family.  Oil painting and French class will have to be on hold for a few days but have everything I need to capture memories and images.
Keep me and the others in your thoughts and prayer while on this adventure.  Adios, marta

Life Session at RAM, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

Finally got to return to the art museum for their monthly life drawing sessions. I'm very rusty after 3 months of no practice!

The Squirrels

My sister and brother-in-law's cabin in New Mexico is in the Sangre de Cristo mountains about 30 miles from Taos, NM.  It is nestled among 20 or so other cabins, most of which are vacation homes.  The week I went to spend up there was moving in furniture week.

On the night Terry arrived with the moving van it had been raining hard with roaring thunder and flashes of lightning (both of which I rarely experience).    He'd traveled from Albuquerque passing several washed out roads to get to the cabin.  After unloading the furniture he surprised us with a cord of wood in the van.  They just threw it in a pile in front of the cabin to be stacked later.

The next morning a family of squirrels had taken up residence and the dog was all over the pile sniffing out the critters.  We laughed thinking the squirrels were probably having a good old time teasing the dog!  The kids ran for cameras and captured several good shots of them and from those I did the watercolor below and the ink wash and neocolor above.  I approached the wc like I do a figure drawing and it seemed to work for me.  It took about an hour to paint.  The one above I did later quickly with a niji brush filled with diluted Noodler's ink  and then laid some neocolor crayon over it and wiped with a damp brush.  It took no more than 15 minutes to do and I wasn't as careful about proportions on it.  But I liked the finished sketch.

My Party Continues

Blood Oranges in Gouache
gouache in moleskine

Well, it's a private party today with just my new art supplies and me. Yesterday was a great birthday despite having to work. A very long 12 hour shift with barely a moment to take a break. I feel blessed for I spent it with some of the best people I know. They took up a collection and bought a big birthday cake and took a minute to run into the kitchen to sing me happy birthday before heading back to their patients. I felt very special. On the way home Rudy and I had a rendezvous at our favorite sushi eatery where the bartender who knows us came to the table with a big bowl of green tea ice cream in honor of my birthday!

Today I headed to the library to look for books about gouache and not finding anything headed to Borders but they didn't have anything either. So I came home and after not finding too much online either I figured, like many other things I do; I'll just teach myself. So here is a very bad first gouache sketch done in my moleskine watercolour sketchbook.
