watercolor palettes, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

I'm getting ready to begin making some new sketchbooks for my upcoming trip to europe and so I've started to think about travel art supplies. This is my assortment of watercolor paint boxes/palettes.

If you click on the photo it will take you to Flickr where I've added notes to the individual palettes.

Monday Show and Tell.....

Monday, July 30, 2007 at 11:40 AM
How much more show and tell for a Monday do I dare to show? Last week while at the beach, after a hot bike ride back to the RV park, cool showers and "playfulness" on the feather bed...he fell asleep. I didn't want to wake him so I slipped out of bed quietly and sat at the little dinette table twiddling my fingers....then quickly realized I had an opportunity and should not miss it! After he woke I confessed and to my utter amazement he was impressed. He asked for me not to blog it but a few days later he said it was OK. So, here is my show and tell..........Mon amour:

Before I settle back and begin to browse my friend's blogs and spend some time commenting; I want to thank those of you who stopped by, left a comment and enjoyed my musings from Newport Beach, California. Rudy and I spent just a few short days there but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had fun bike riding and were in utter disbelief that we hadn't forgotten how to! We bought nice steaks and grilled and ate all our veggies. We went for walks and window shopped on Balboa Island and had margaritas and cerveza near the pier at Cabo Cantina. We walked the pier, ate at Ruby's one day and spent time lying on the beach soaking up sunshine and smelling ocean breezes. I got lots of opportunities to sketch as we rode our bikes past 2 to 3 million dollar cottages (unbelievable), rode the ferry to the peninsula or just lounged at our campsite....and yes, the days ended blissfully under the soft down comforter......darn, we had to come home today because we both work tomorrow!!!!

ps: I couldn't resist and got my iphone 2 weeks ago. I LOVE IT!!!!! Not only am I always 'connected' but it takes pretty good photos which I can send right to the blog. Typing is a bit tricky but I'm getting faster! And of course I love the 'big' screen for watching video and tv shows. I love to listen to books and music too.... it is just an awesome little gadget!!!!!

Rest of this month's life drawing session

at 11:04 AM
I finally got a few minutes to add the rest of the drawings from the other night. The headless one was my first gesture sketch and my favorite of the night. The signed watercolor my last of the night and I knew to quit while I was ahead.
Yes, Las Campanas is a great place to meet up with friends over margaritas and nachos! It's one of those perfect outdoor settings that perhaps someday will lend itself to some sketching. Usually we are too busy gabbing and eating!
I failed to mention that at the life drawing session the model was last due to heavy traffic. Our friend Dianne cheerfully stepped in for the first 15minutes as our model. But she wouldn't take her clothes off! Imagine that! But what a good sport she was!

Figure Drawing and Drinks

Thursday, July 19, 2007 at 10:09 PM
Tonight was the monthly life drawing session at RAM (Riverside Art Museum). Dianne and I were running a bit late for dinner so we got to the museum , set up and enjoyed drawing/painting for a couple of hours. But since we hadn't eaten dinner we left a bit early and headed to the Mission Inn to "Las Campanas" for drinks and dinner.
We had such a good time! The evening was perfect for dinning outdoors, the drinks satisfying but most of all the conversation and camaraderie wonderful! We spent as much time over drinks and dinner as we did at the art museum! This is my best from tonight. It's graphite stick with watercolor on 1/2 sheet hot press 90# Arches paper.

Muy Caras

Since I've this day to myself I spent it catching up on small tasks I've put off and running a few errands. But as the afternoon dragged on and I thought of 101 excuse why I should paint instead of go to the gym.....these pair of eggplants beckoned me to do them justice.

Last Saturday at the farmer's market I was buying last of the season strawberries for a very hefty price. I eyed the eggplant more so to paint than to eat. The young woman at the veggie stand said to the man working with her " Estamos cobrando mucho por el eggplant." (We are charging too much for the eggplant) I smiled at her and said, "oh, you think so too?" She laughed and said she didn't realized I could understand her! Embarrassed, she gave them both to me for a dollar.

I got a little sloppy with them and am not pleased with how the tops where the leaves are turned out. I had a hard time mixing just the right colors. I do like that it turned out a fairly good composition and that my shadow areas although not quite what I envisioned, still work. Mostly I'm happy that I satisfied the desire today to paint. Now, maybe I should go to the gym? Well, maybe after I have a bowl of strawberry gelato that I made this morning with those very expensive berries!

Show and Tell Monday..........

Monday, July 16, 2007 at 1:18 PM

I'm not sure if there is a theme to follow or just post what ever you feel like posting on Mondays. Sandy of Sandy's Monday Show and Tell has this Monday thing going on so I thought I'd participate this week...since it's Monday. This is a self portrait I did about 10 years ago from linoleum block that I carved. I carved 3 separate blocks for each color and then carefully inked them and pressed each one being careful to line them all up correctly. It was a fun project and I've gotten lots of use out of this image. I really should track down the linoleum blocks and maybe print up a few more!

Weekend with sketchbook in hand

Sunday, July 15, 2007 at 6:39 PM
Thank you all for such inspiring kudos on the left hand sketch which finally got me back to sketching. I challenged myself this weekend by drawing some of my family members while we all were camping at the local regional park: Jurupa Regional Park, Riverside, CA. I have my body proportions all over the place and I didn't really get a likeness of any of them; but I sketched and played with the colors and enjoyed the laughter, food and the bonding that was going on with the New Mexico cousins reacquainting themselves with the California cousins. But, I'm sure glad the weekend is over and I can sleep in my own bed tonight!

My Lazy Left Hand

Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 8:01 PM
It seems like a lot of us (EDM and blogger artists) are under an uncreative spell. That's ok because with summer have come long days with so much to fill them up with. Some people are traveling, some enjoying summer harvest keeping busy in the kitchen and some of us just want to lay by the pool and keep cool.
But I couldn't let another day go by without doing a little drawing and painting. With no other inspiration than my own hand I did this little watercolour sketch this evening. It is a good feeling to get out the paints and play for awhile.
My month has had many changes and with so much going on it is hard to get the creative juices flowing again. I have made a serious effort to get back into shape by joining the local gym and watching what I eat. Already after a month I am on a good road to success and enjoying the new me. I have also been pampering myself with manicures and pedicures twice a month. Our two boys have moved in for the summer so the house is alive again with the boys here...we are enjoying it. Tomorrow my sister and her brood arrive from Albuquerque, New Mexico for a 10 day visit....I can't wait to spoil kids!
So, for now, I'll keep lounging poolside, working as little as possible and enjoying the summer with family and friends. Oh, and sketching and painting as time permits!

You Are 75% Creative

You are beyond creative. You are a true artist - even if it's not in the conventional sense of the word.
You love creating for its own sake, and you find yourself quite inspired at times.

Happy 4th of July, originally uploaded by mmvgonzales.

While the rest of you are bbq-ing burgers and hot dogs, eating watermelon and cooling off at beaches, pools or lakes...I have to work :( So I got my celebrating in today and am wishing all of you a fun filled day and spectacular firework evening!!!!! Enjoy!!

As the juice is dripping down my chin...

it was so good copy

I ate it before I sketched it....hey, it's hot here and I couldn't help myself! The knife seems oddly placed here, perhaps I should have 're-arranged' the setting first. As much as I dislike painting flowers, I love painting fruits and veggies! and eating them too. I have been known to eat flowers as well :)

Recipe Card Exchange

at 4:33 PM
I am participating in my first online exchange. I've read all the rules and think I am good to go. Of course I leave everything till the last minute and this isn't any different. I am having fun with this though. I'm not much of a cook but have a few good recipes up my sleeve! I didn't post the photos here because I am not sure who is in on this exchange and I wouldn't want to spoil the element of surprise. So if you are part of the exchange you can choose to peek or not. I made 8 cards (one for me to keep).
