Last week we spent a few wonderful days in our little "casita" (trailer) on the beach. I took this photos after I had done the watercolor as I really do love working from life. Rudy complained about making his nose too large and his hat not sitting right on his head. So I tried to fix up those items to please him! I like this so much because this IS how Rudy relaxes when we get away from it all....just being a beach bum!

Mi Casa EDM #165

I have had so much fun looking at all the EDMr's homes with this challenge that I just had to drop the black conte and figure studies for a bit to do this watercolor and pencil of my "casita".
I live in Riverside, California in a community that is only about 20 years old: Orangecrest. Our home is 18 years old. My studio is in the bedroom above the garage. From there I have a great view of what's going on in the neighborhood. So if you are ever in my neck of the woods, come on by for a visit or bring a suitcase and stay awhile!

I am on campus an hour before my class starts which gives me time to check out the stacks in the library and/or do some quick sketching. This morning was beautiful and sunny but very cold and windy. I finished up the sketch I had begun last week of the building surrounding the quad and did a new one of the kids napping by the large picture windows.
I had a good session in class today. Can't wait to post some of today's sketches. She had us simplifying the body into geometric shapes before beginning a long pose with the model. We also had some play time with a couple of the poses; pretending we were small children and approaching the drawing with that mindset. It was fun!

From Mama's arms to God's

I got the news that Devin died at the hospital this evening. He had been there for several weeks; desperately fighting his disease. You always found Devin in his mama's arms. He was a sweet and extremely bright little boy; barely two years old and he knew his alphabet and numbers. He was very much loved by his parents and grandma who were with him constantly. My heart was broken when I got the phone call from one of the other nurses. We loved our boy and we are all feeling such a great loss. This portrait I did of Devin in his mama's arms last summer, hangs in my studio. I will be relinquishing it soon and I will miss it and my boy.
When such a tremendous ache falls upon my heart I reach for my art tools and loose myself there for a bit. This evening I sat alone and did this little copy from a book I borrowed at the library last week. The sound of the gentle strokes of the charcoal pencil on the paper brought me comfort. Thank you God for filling my life with art and little ones.

The figure class is in full swing this week with lectures, studio time, critiques and assignments for the semester. I realized today that my artistic focus is going to have to be committed 100% to this new direction. I am missing my watercolors but am willing to sacrifice for now to learn the most that I can from this class. I feel very fortunate to be in this class with this particular instructor that I highly admire. I'll post some of this week's work on Thursday with some notes on what I am learning. This sketch is done in my sketchbook/journal that I have begun for this class. I copied it from one of my new books: Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Peck. It's done in pencil: 2b to 6b.

This is my gouache painting on bristol board, 9 x 12 inches
Today Annie and I spent the afternoon learning about blind contour drawing.
First we stopped by for a visit at my friend Diahn's blog: Art by Diahn to see what a blind contour drawing was. Annie's eyes flew wide open anticipating this lesson would be challenging. I told her our brains were going to work very hard with our drawing hand and arm!

I drew this from a reference photo I found on the internet. A few years ago I got the chance to visit this beautiful chapel and see the miraculous staircase.
addendum:
I find I do not like drawing or painting from photos. I have some serious vision problems and I find that photos do not look like 'my world' so I shun from using them if at all possible. This pencil drawing was a challenge for me in that I'm more of a quick get it done kind of girl and this took time and patience. Even so I couldn't see the photograph that well (I did blow it up in photoshop) thus my drawing is not as accurate as the photo. This staircase left an impression on me when I first saw it. I only wish I could have climbed up it but it's roped off to the public.

My Blog's Birthday!

Yesterday we spent a wonderful evening of good food, drink and conversation at Dianne and Randy's. I took her over some of my lemons and blood oranges. I was happily surprised to see a sketch of them on her blog today. Those lemons and oranges are really getting around!
I worked alongside one of our younger nurses today who turned 30 yesterday. I told her this birthday season was in full swing and I was still in a celebrating mood. So I gave her $$ and she braved a rain storm to go out and buy us both a steak dinner. We had quite a feast the two of us; still celebrating our birthdays!
But today is another Birthday......MY BLOG'S FIRST! Having worked all day I didn't get a chance to sketch so thought I'd post some doodling I did a few days ago....I have met so many wonderful artist through these pages this past year. I've met 4 of you in person and hope to double that this year!!! Thank you all for your constant encouragement and friendship!!

My friend Shirley over at Paper and Threads posted her lemons yesterday stating a desire for having some lemon squares. I love lemon bars but had never made them. With a tree heavy laden with juicy Meyer lemons I asked her for her favorite lemon square recipe. She so kindly sent it my way in this morning's email. Wonderful opportunity to bake on this rainy day and to practice another gouache painting. Also my first try at a watercolour on hot pressed paper. A bit different from working on cold press but a good experience also. Thank you Shirley for the recipe! You are all welcome to have one. Please tell me how you liked them!

Everyday is my birthday!

Officially I came into the world the evening of January 21, 1956. So tomorrow night I will be 52 years old. I don't feel 52 because I play like I'm 12 and feel like I'm 35. Not bad huh? This year my birthday began on Thursday when Dianne and Dawn treated me to presents and dinner before the Life Drawing session. Yesterday was the only day Rudy and I had off together so he took me to Sterling Art for a shopping spree! I bought gouache which I have been wanting to play with, some more pads of bristol board and lots of pencils. I also bought some colored inks to experiment with. He then took me out for a nice long lunch. Today my niece (Annie's mother) is making me a cake. I'm sure they will sing Happy Birthday and I'll get to blow out candles! I just might continue the celebration a few more days!

I spent the day at work in a Pediatric Oncology meeting at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, California. This was the view from the 4th floor conference room. It was a cold and windy day making the air crisp and the sky clear. Beautiful!

Art Lessons began today

Annie began her first art lesson with me today. We 'worked' for about an hour learning about shapes and contour lines in drawing. When finished she took up her new terracota pencil and did a sketch of me knitting! You can see it here at her blog: Annie's Adventures with Nina.
While she drew me I did a quick sketch of a 5 lb weight that we'd used as a subject for one of our contour drawings.

I intended to take a nap in the studio today before preparing for the evening. But instead I found myself trying out a new 9x12 sketchbook with 65lb drawing paper. I just picked something in the studio, an old Kodak Brownie camera that used to belong to my husband's mother. The sea shell I don't remember where it's from and the luggage tag a souvenir from a cruise we took on the Queen Mary last December.

Bergamont Park

This is my neighborhood. After traveling thousands of miles from home I realized I'd never done a sketch of the place I call home. I live in the suburbs in Riverside, California, US. about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. Our town is a little over 100 years old and was once a big citrus producer. Very few orange groves remain now.
This sketch is from this morning's walk. I had every intention of a nice long walk but instead walked about 5 minutes out my door to the local park I decided that yesterday's winds had given way to a beautiful (smoke free) blue sky and I should capture the scene today. The park, unlike those I saw in europe, is usually void of people in the day time. We are all too busy to just go promanade around this delightful little green square. But late in the afternoon the children come out to play or gather for soccer or ball practice. Some of the teenagers sit on the benches and smoke while other play on the basketball courts. Other people just come by while walking the dog or as part of their exercise routine. I never did finished my walk this morning......

Spinning My Wheels

Yesterday I woke up in a strange mood. I had the whole weekend off but hadn't made any plans. I thought of going to the farmer's market, maybe to even sketch there, but didn't want to go alone. I needed some serious work in the kitchen, tidying up and rearranging...but didn't feel like doing that either. A walk perhaps or the gym perhaps? Those 6 lbs I lost in Europe are going to find themselves back on me if I don't watch it! I was spinning my wheels.
I noticed Dianne online and gave her a call. She invited me to come along with her and her family to the opening reception of the Visions Art Quilt Exhibit in San Diego where one of her beautiful quilts was juried in. So, I went. I had a great time.! Another of our friends joined us there also. It was a fun evening and I was glad I'd gone along. She's a wonderful artist but more so, a very good friend.
While waiting for her to pick me up I drew these two random sketches in my neglected Moleskine watercolour book and added color to them this evening.....after spending the day cleaning and rearranging the kitchen....oh, and baking 2 loafs of pumpkin bread...the house smells yummy!!!! But no exercising today :(
