1500+ photos

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 11:13 AM

Well, we've been home now for over a week and almost back to normal. I still have over 1500 photos to go through and organize before I subject family and friends to a slide show! We have unpacked but still have odds and ends to take care of. The shelfs in my studio dedicated to my travels now have to make room for a mini statue of David from Florence, the colloseum from Rome and a phone booth from London. I have a bag full of ticket stubs and metro maps to include in a photo album...once I decide on the photos!
Adam and Amy have uploaded their photos to the web.

but of ALL the photos from the trip this is my favorite!

My Favorite Photo
At the Trevi Fountain in Rome; enjoying gelato and each other!
How to keep me happy...could take a lifetime to learn....and still be worth it.

The tower

Today we got up early, had a good breakfast and set out for sightseeing. We were still tired as with the time change it has been difficult for all of us to get back in sync with our internal body clocks. After breakfast onto Victoria Station to buy 3 day travel cards and take the LONDON TUBE to The Tower of London where we were facinated by so much history. I especially liked the suits of armour and took some good photos.

Then a ride on the Thames from The Tower Bridge to Westminster where we spotted Big Ben, The Houses of Parliment and went into Westminster Abby. We then walked to Trafalger Square passing no. 10 Downing Street and sat ourselves down for a nice lunch at the National Gallery's cafe. We were done...so sleepy that we will leave the tour of the National Gallery for another day.......back to the B&B and we all took long naps....Adam is still asleep...we left him a not:)

gotta run......ciao...untill next time I check in!

Yeah! I found internet access........yippy! ok, but I have to be quick.....We arrived safely though a bit late with no time to rest. We were hungry and so tired. We wandered a short way and found the Traveler's Tavern where Adam and Amy ordered 4 pints and some fish and chips. I normally don't like beer but it was good......London..we are here.

Europe Adventure 2007

Monday, October 8, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Hello everyone!
Tomorrow Rudy, Adam, Amy and I take off for a trip to Europe. Adam is joining us for the first 9 days to London and Rome, Amy continues on with us through Florence, Barcelona and Paris and flies home 6 days before Rudy and I come back around November 2nd.

I am hoping to update my art blog mARTa's art as we travel from city to city with stories and hopefully some sketches or photos of where we are. If you'd like to follow along check the blog every few days... or not...I won't be offended if you just delete my emails!

I've already posted some sketches of our trip preparations and looks like we are all set to go. I have caught a cold and am taking my airborn and drinking lots of fluids. Hopefully it will pass soon.

This week we arrive in London on Wednesday around 3pm local time. Just in time to get settled in and take ourselves out for a bite to eat and check out our surroundings. We are staying at the Elizabeth B&B near Victoria station, a good starting off point for much of our sight seeing.

Wish us a good flight and good health and I'll check in again soon!

One more day.....

before we leave on Tuesday morning for our European Adventure! My Amy, like her mother, is well organized and has it all together. Adam, like his father has left many things to the last minute so I know tomorrow, beside making sure I have everything....I have to make sure they have everything! I will post again Tuesday morning before we leave, then I'm hoping to post frequently (no pictures) to keep family and friends abreast of where we are and what we are up to!!!
This sketch I added to my travel journal while at quilt camp. I'm hoping I get lots of opportunities to sketch on this trip. If not, I'll hopefully have lots of reference photos!!! Oh, by the way, the new me has a cute short haircut and a bit more blond.....ciao!

My Art Supplies for the Trip

Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 9:17 PM
I have finally decided what to take on this trip. I made a small portfolio that doubles as a drawing board, to use for carrying a few sheets of watercolor paper so I can sketch/paint on site. I opted for not taking the larger one I made to save on space. Instead I'll take the rest of my pre-cut watercolor pages in a zip-lock bag. I can buy more paper if I need to.
I am taking 2 sable travel brushes that I just love and 2 niji watercolor brushes which I also love! 2 Faber-Castell PITT artist pens and my water soluble Derwent graphite sticks. I also tucked in a small elephant sponge.
Now for the watercolours! I decided it was more important to take all the colours I love rather than work from my smaller Winsor & Newton palette that holds 12, 1/2 pans. I just have more variety with the colours in my Schminike palette that I filled myself. That's it! I'm hoping to visit a few art stores in London, Florence and Paris where I might see something I just have to have!!!!!!

mARTa is going to Europe

Monday, September 24, 2007 at 5:18 PM
I am 2 weeks away from a long anticipated trip to Europe with my husband Rudy and two of our children: Adam and Amy. We leave October 9th and the kids return later in the month, Rudy and I are there till November 2nd.

How to pack for a month long trip:
I only carry my Swiss Army (carry on) backpack with wheels and it's detachable day pack. I take a purse as well. That's it! I only pack it 1/2 full to save room for some small purchases while I travel.
I am a firm believer that you should only take what you can comfortably run with......anything more is unnecessary. Now...........what goes inside my backpack..........(to be continued)

A Pigeon in Bologna, Italy

Monday, January 29, 2007 at 2:07 PM
I am spending the afternoon browsing my art catalogs in preparation of placing an order for more watercolor paper and some new brushes.

A nice lady living in Italy who came by to visit my blog and was first to post :), said she'd like to see some watercolors here as well. Most of mine are not that good but I do like this one.

This little sketch came about one evening as I was trying to duplicate the colors from a photo I took of a fountain in Bologna, Italy. The sketch was weak so I thought I'd try at least to capture the colors. The whole thing failed because I just couldn't figure it out. So instead I concentrated on a pigeon that sat on the fountain and felt that it just painted itself. I was very happy with the result.
