No one told me there would be bears!

Tomorrow morning I'm boarding a small jet and flying off to New Mexico.  I love to fly so the smaller plane doesn't bother me.  The plus is the price is right and it's nonstop to Albuquerque.  My sister Marissa and her family live there but have recently bought a vacation cabin in the Tres Ritos area; about 30 miles from Taos, NM.  So on Thursday we are driving to spend several days at the cabin.  She tells me there is no cell phone service, no phone yet, no internet access and no propane yet.  But there is water and electricity.  What she didn't tell me is:

There are bears!

My art supplies are wisely chosen, I have my backpack to pack, cameras to get ready, now, if I only could remember where I put those bear bells!

Will try to post if I find wifi but if not I'll share when I get back.....if the bears don't eat me!

It was just a little bear, around 200 pounds. The game warden trapped and tagged it. They he "spanked" it which means they shot it with rubber bullets. Then the whole neighborhood chased it away while banging pots and pans. We hope it was scared enough to not return. I'll buy you bear bells on the way up to the cabin. See ya tomorrow. I have two hikes planned for us and a jaunt into Taos.

Oh, Marta! Have SO much fun. That is absolutely one of my favorite places in these United States...I spent 6 weeks up in the Taos Ski Valley and all over northern NM when I was in college. Beautiful!

Poor little bear. He's sooo cute and how sad he got spanked! But I guess better to get spanked than to be in big trouble for eating our Marta! Come back safe and sound and hopefully with no half-finished sketches of bears!

I HEAR you about the bears, I feel the same way! It sounds like a fabulous vacation. And its close to Arizona :) I can't wait to see what beauty you create.

I have nominated you for an award on my blog. If you don't want to participate, that is fine too!

  9. That area is one of my favorite places in the world. It's worth risking a meeting with a bear to be up there for a while - I'm extremely jealous. Can't wait to see your sketches of Taos and the mountains, to see how things have changed up there.

Marta, enjoy the painting trip for me. May be the bears can be a good subject for you (from a safe distance) and they sure will keep you motivated to stay painting inside the cabin. Ai
